Energy Audits for Schools, Colleges, and Universities
Education is a pillar of our society. Not only do schools, colleges, and universities help nurture the future generations, but the buildings also serve several important roles in our communities.
This often includes being a voting center, emergency shelter, venue for events, and much more. They also bring people together to celebrate sports and the fine arts.
It’s unfortunate, then, that schools and colleges can be major culprits of energy inefficiency. The widely varying energy needs – including the demands of classrooms, auditoriums, dorms, lecture halls, and science laboratories – can be difficult to manage. The problem is even worse in older buildings relying on outdated infrastructure.
The good news is that there are tools available to help schools track their energy usage and identify areas of improvement. There are three levels of audits recognized by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
ASHRAE Level 1 Audits for Schools
A Level 1 audit, the most basic level, includes:
- Performing a walk-through of the site
- Conducting interviews of key operations personnel
- Reviewing your facility’s utility bills
This allows you to identify low- or no-cost changes that would improve energy efficiency on campus.
ASHRAE Level 2 Audits for Schools
The second level of the audit offers more intense data collection and reporting. With this information, you can move forward with more expensive improvements, with the confidence that it will be worth it.
This stage of energy auditing includes:
- Breaking down energy consumption by end-use and identifying areas that present the greatest opportunities for improved efficiency
- Analyzing utility rates to find opportunities for a lower rate
- Interviewing more important building personnel to gain insight in building operations, potential problem areas, and defining financial and non-financial goals.
ASHRAE Level 3 Audits for Schools
Finally, if you need long-term data that tracks the energy usage of the school, a Level 3 audit will be helpful.
At this stage, there is detailed field gathering of data, and the data is analyzed more intensely to determine major areas of improvement and the potential costs of those improvements.
